Hillsborough River SP - Florida in mid November

We are planning a trip to Bush Gardens in mid November. Having checked various reviews we are leaning towards Hillsborough River State Park.
We would be staying there during the middle of the week so would avoid the weekend rush. I was wanting to know how crowded the park was that time of year, and if insects are a problem also.
Thanks,
Christopher

RE: Smoky Mt questions

If you don't need many extra frills, the times we were there I noticed a few newer RV parks on Wears Valley Parkway, which runs between Townsend and Pigeon Forge. Might be a good compromise to get out of the Pigeon Forge area without burning all the gas to get to Townsend.
Fox Den, closest to Pigeon Forge, looks like little more than a convenient store with a parking lot of hook-ups out back. Not much to look at but the place has always been nearly empty when we drove by so it might be quiet.
Smoker Holler is closer to Townsend and looks like it might be an older campground re-opened under a new name. Gravel roads in a field of rolling hills from what I rememeber, and again not crowded whenever we have gone past. Probbaly less road noise here.

RE: Things to do and see - Madison Indiana / Clifty Falls

There are some historical homes you can tour in Madison, and you will probably want to visit the various waterfalls in the park.
We've stayed at Clifty Falls a few times and its a very nice park.

RE: Smoky Mt questions

We usually go in May, when school is in session, but the pattern we noticed will probably still apply. During the middle of the week the crowds aren't too bad. Weekends of course will be packed.
I wouldn't worry about not having reservations. Plenty of RV parks in that area, but to save some gas I'd call a day or two ahead and see who has space available.
We've stayed at Tremont Hills in Townsend twice and liked it, though the place gets mixed reviews depending on who was working in the office.
Some people will probably get an early start on the Labor Day weekend so you might want to get into town right after Labor Day. That way you can most likely get a site for the entire week.

RE: Update - Old Dometic fridge problem with gas operation

Thanks. I do clean the burner on a regular basis. Access to that from the outside is easy. I was trying to avoid removing the refer from the wall to clean out the flue. Seems to be the only way to access the top. In order to do this in my TT I have to do alot of disassembling of cabinets.

Update - Old Dometic fridge problem with gas operation

Thanks for suggesting that I check the gas pressure first. Using a homemade manometer I only got 8" of pressure, which dropped to 6" when turning on one burner on the stove.
The regulator, which appears to be shot, is about four years old. Doing a search here says that they often fail around five years, though a few last forever.
I'll replace the regulator over the next few days and assume my problem will be solved. Probably saved me a lot of trouble ripping apart the fridge burner, etc.

RE: Old Dometic fridge problem with gas operation

I'm just using one of those cheesy thermometers that you hang in a fridge. The acuracy seems pretty good though.
I'll check that gas pressure though, and clean the orifice first. Much easier than pulling the fridge out to clean the flue.

Old Dometic fridge problem with gas operation

This is a Dometic RM-100 from 1979. It works fine on electric but just recently I noticed that it wasn't cooling properly on gas.
Overnight when it is cool outside, with the thermostat set at the normal position, the temp inside the refer will be fine. However, if you check it later in the day when outside temps are in the 80's, and the fridge door has been closed all day, the temp inside the refer will have raised about 10 degrees.
The burner flame looks fine and I was able to verify that the baffle is in the correct position in the flue. Blew some compressed air up the flue but have not removed the refer from the wall to actually clean the flue or inspect it properly.
Does this sound like a dirty flue, failing gas thermostat, or...?
Thanks,
Christopher

Branson, MO. Any slow time of year?

We haven't been to Branson yet, but have been to the Gatlinburg / Pigeon Forge area many times, which is another popular family friendly tourist destination.
For Gatlinburg, we usually go down during the middle of a week in April or May, when the weather is nice and with school still in session the crowds haven't really showed up so we don't spend most of our vacation sitting in traffic.
I understand that Branson normally attracts an older crowd, which might mean that whether or not school is in session won't affect the tourist population.
Is there any slow time of year for Branson or is it crowded all year long?
Thanks,
Christopher

RE: Grand Canyon, South Rim -- Where to Camp?

There are a number of RV parks in Williams, AZ. Thats about 30 - 45 minutes away, but with multiple parks in the area there would be no need for reservations. Maybe stay there one night and move your RV if there is space available at the Canyon and you like the facilities there.
We stayed at Railside RV Ranch in Williams for three nights and drove to the Canyon from there. Nice base camp.

I meant Plain City, which is just west of Columbus.
Thanks for the comments. We would be using this park as a base camp for visiting Columbus so it wouldn't have to be perfet.

Pastime Park, Columbus, OH

I found out about this smalltown park that evidently has RV sites from a neighbor.
I've been able to turn up some information on-line but haven't found any reviews. Anyone stayed there or been by the place and can comment?

RE: Williams, AZ Which campground do you prefer

We stayed at Railside RV Ranch about a year ago and liked it a lot. Located just outside of town with a nice atomosphere. Good base camp for day trips to the Grand Canyon.
We saw Grand Canyon Railway RV Park and while nice, it really is just a parking lot with hookups. However, if you plan to ride the train it is probably the best place to stay since they have package deals and the depot is right there.

RE: Gatlinburg, TN

Never stayed at that KOA in Townsend but have stayed down the road at Tremont Hills twice and give it a thumbs up.
If the choice was between any campground in Townsend or the Gatlinburg/Pigeon Forge area, Townsend gets my vote. Much more peaceful and quiet. You won't mind driving into Pigeon Forge either. Very scenic as mentioned.

RE: Gatlinburg, TN

We haven't stayed there but have been past it. Looks about typical for what you'll find in the Pigeon Forge area but has the plus of not being right on the main strip for a little less noise. The place gets good reviews on rvparkreviews.com and is close to many attractions so it should work out well for you.

Any State Parks close to Crystal River, FL?

A quick search turns up a lot of private RV parks around Crystal River. I am trying to find a State Park campground in the area that might provide a little more elbow room and a natural setting, and of course might cost less.
Thanks,
Christopher

RE: colorado state parks

Chatfield State Park, SW of Denver is beautiful and has a loop of full hookup sites. We had a site overlooking the reservoir in the disatnce with mountains beyond.
While we didn't use the public facilities, I did take a peek and they were clean, though we were there in the middle of the week and the place was pretty empty. Showers are coin operated.

RE: Campground Facilities, Great Smoky Nat'l Park

While I haven't stayed at either campground (yet), I have driven thru Cades Cove and Elkmont, and they look like beautiful places to stay.
If you plan on using a tote tank for waste, something to keep in mind is that Cades Cove has a dump station right there in the campground. Elkmont however, has no dumpstation, though one is located off of one of the park roads several miles away.
Haven't been thru Smokemont.

RE: KOA Townsend TN.

I'll suggest staying just down the road at Tremont Hills. the price will probably be about the same but you will have a little more elbow room. Also has some sites on the river.

Columbus, OH - Where to stay?

We are planning a trip to the Columbus Zoo, which is on the northwest side of town. Looking for a campground or RV park that might be 30 minutes away.
Staying in a 31' travel trailer for 2-3 nights. No kids but one small dog. Electic only such as a State Park would be just fine. Full hookups would be great as long as we weren't packed into some parking lot style place.
